What to Expect in Therapy

A place to slow down, understand yourself, and feel supported.

There are moments in life when things begin to feel heavy. You might notice your mind constantly racing, feeling overwhelmed by work or relationships, or carrying stress that never seems to fully settle.

Psychotherapy offers a space where you don’t have to hold everything on your own.

At Birch Grove Wellness, therapy is a collaborative process where we work together to understand what you’re experiencing, how your nervous system is responding, and what might help you feel more grounded, clear, and connected to yourself again.

Many clients begin therapy feeling unsure of where to start. That’s okay. You don’t need to have the right words or a clear plan before your first session.

Your role is simply to show up as you are.

When Adults Seek Therapy

You might be noticing:

  • Anxiety, overthinking, or feeling constantly on edge
  • Burnout or emotional exhaustion from work or responsibilities
  • Difficulty managing stress or regulating emotions
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
  • Relationship challenges or recurring conflict
  • A major life transition such as career change, breakup, or relocation
  • Low mood, loss of motivation, or feeling stuck
  • The lasting impact of past experiences or trauma
  • A desire to understand yourself more deeply

Therapy isn’t only for crisis. Many clients seek psychotherapy because they want to feel more balanced, confident, and aligned in their lives.

Seeking support is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It’s often the first step toward meaningful change.

What Therapy is Like

Many people feel nervous before starting therapy. Common questions include:

What if I don’t know what to say?
Will the therapist judge me?
What actually happens in a session?

Therapy sessions at Birch Grove Wellness are designed to feel supportive, conversational, and collaborative.

Your first session

Your first therapy session focuses on understanding you and what has brought you to therapy.

We may explore:

  • what has been feeling difficult recently
  • patterns you’ve noticed in your thoughts or emotions
  • experiences that may have shaped how you respond to stress
  • what you hope might change through therapy

You are always free to share only what feels comfortable.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy is not about being “fixed.” It’s about developing a deeper understanding of yourself and learning tools that support your emotional well-being.

In our work together, therapy may help you:

Understand patterns

Explore how your thoughts, emotions, and nervous system responses influence your reactions and behaviours.

Regulate stress and anxiety

Learn practical tools that help your body and mind settle when you feel overwhelmed.

Improve relationships

Recognize patterns in communication, boundaries, and emotional connection.

Process difficult experiences

Work through past experiences that may still be affecting your present life.

Build emotional resilience

Develop the skills needed to navigate stress, conflict, and uncertainty with greater confidence.

Reconnect with yourself

Gain clarity around your values, needs, and direction in life.

Therapy often becomes a place where people begin to feel more calm, grounded, and capable of navigating life’s challenges.

What Makes Therapy at Birch Grove Wellness Different

At Birch Grove Wellness, therapy integrates both psychological insight and nervous system awareness. With a background in kinesiology, we know the importance of having both a safe space for growth and access to practical tools for self-directed application.

Many mental health challenges such as anxiety, burnout, and emotional overwhelm are connected to how the nervous system responds to stress.

This integrative approach helps clients develop both practical coping tools and deeper emotional insight.

Booking your First Session

Initial Session

Your first psychotherapy session is focused on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. During this session we may explore: what has been feeling challenging or stressful, patterns you have noticed in your thoughts, emotions, or relationships, what you would like to change or improve and goals for therapy. There is no pressure to share anything you are not ready to discuss. The session moves at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Progression

On Going Sessions

Over time, therapy becomes a place where we begin to gently explore deeper patterns. Sessions may include: reflective conversation, nervous system regulation tools, somatic awareness practices, identifying emotional patterns, exploring parts of yourself that hold stress or protection, practical strategies to support daily life. Some sessions focus on insight and understanding. Others focus on building skills or regulating the nervous system. Therapy is always paced according to what feels manageable for you. Clients start with a weekly frequency to get the most out of their experience.
Conclusion

When to Finish Therapy

Therapy does not have to last forever. Many clients choose to conclude therapy when they feel they have gained the insight, tools, and confidence needed to navigate life more independently. This might look like feeling more emotionally regulated, having clearer boundaries, or experiencing greater stability in relationships and daily life. Ending therapy can also be a thoughtful and collaborative process where we reflect on your progress and discuss ways to maintain the changes you’ve made.
Is that it?

Maintenance Sessions and Returning to Therapy

Some clients choose to transition from regular therapy sessions to occasional check-ins or maintenance sessions. These sessions provide space to reflect on how things are going, revisit tools that have been helpful, and receive support during new life transitions or challenges. Therapy can be flexible—many people pause therapy when things feel stable and return later if new concerns arise. You are always welcome to come back whenever you feel additional support would be helpful.
